Today’s blog post takes us into Westchester County, specifically the village of Tarrytown, New York, in Greenburgh.

Tarrytown is known for its rich history, as well as its river views, historic homes, and plentiful activities. It has something for everyone.

Here in the Northeast, we are fortunate to experience four seasons. With those four seasons come seasons of snow and other extreme weather that can make life a little complicated. We are fortunate to live in an age where we have systems in place to make the weather less inconvenient. But despite all our advances, less-than-ideal weather (like snow and icy conditions) can still present challenges for construction projects like siding replacement.

Take our Tarrytown client today for example, since we mentioned snow and icy conditions.

The owners had a beautiful home on a nice, secluded property, and called us regarding a siding project (as well as a roof replacement). After we discussed details for the roofing and siding project, came out, made an evaluation, and got started, we ran into some harsh weather. And when we say harsh weather, we mean more snowfall than we had seen for a long time.

Now you might think this would halt production of the roof and siding project, but no. Home renovation can’t stop just because of harsh weather. And there is no way homeowners could go a whole season waiting for home repairs like roof and siding replacement.

That is why we have special protocols in place for home renovations that occur during less-than-ideal weather. There was a siding replacement and roofing job that needed to be done in Tarrytown, New York, and we are happy to say we did it.

Now for the job itself. Getting there was one of our main challenges. The road to the home was sequestered and full of hills. This road makes for a beautiful drive in the summer but a dangerous ride in a New York winter.

And since it was winter, the road and everything else was icy. Safety for the homeowners and our team is one of our top priorities. As roofing and siding professionals, we are always prepared for every situation. We even packed extra salt for the job just to be completely prepared, and we sure did use that salt.

And for the siding details: There were two sections of the home, and the owners were struggling with their siding design. After we presented all the options, they decided to go in two different directions with that siding design.

On the main house, they wanted horizontal lap siding. Horizontal lap siding is pretty much just as the name describes. It’s siding that is placed horizontally in an overlapping pattern. On the barn house side, they wanted vertical board and batten siding. While both are great options, board and batten siding is having a moment right now as a popular siding style.

Despite being around for almost 200 years, it’s currently one of the top housing trends. Originally, board and batten siding started with wide vertical planks drawn together by thin vertical strips, hence the name board and batten. A fun siding detail you may not know is that this is a popular siding style when building barns. It was a cost-effective, energy-efficient style that also looks nice. It’s been featured everywhere from design magazines to Pinterest boards, just about anywhere highlighting top housing trends. Both popular siding styles are complementary toward each other to really make a home stand out.

We used James Hardie siding for this home repair project, both for the lap siding and wide vertical planks. James Hardie siding is the industry standard for durability, and James Hardie siding is what we recommend to our customers and prefer to install above all others.

For the roof, it was GAF asphalt shingles in a charcoal color. While there are other brands, GAF asphalt shingles are an excellent choice for your roofing needs, offering a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution.

As always, we want our work to be perfect. We wanted everything to look flawless between the horizontal lap siding, the board and batten siding, and the new GAF asphalt roof. That is why when there was some electrical work that needed to be hidden, we made sure to pad out the walls just enough so the panels could breathe, and that the wires had enough space but were also hidden. It came out seamless.

This was one of the projects where we really had to pay extra attention to the siding details. Since we were applying two distinctive styles (horizontal lap siding and wide vertical planks), we needed to make sure that we were doing it in a complementary and cost-effective way. Our project manager worked closely with the team to ensure that everything went according to plan.

Due to the constant winter storm and snow threats and icy conditions, we really needed to maximize our team efforts, as well as keep our workspace organized and dry (hello, extra salt!). There was no time to be wasted. We were prepared, worked around the clock, and got the job done before the deadline.

The homeowner was impressed with our efforts. The siding turned out amazing. The owners really picked the perfect choices to complement their home. (Check the pictures to judge for yourself.) The homeowner has since referred us to some friends, which makes us even prouder.

We look forward to working with them and hope the homeowner enjoys his clever siding design for years to come. For any home renovation questions regarding lap siding, roofing, gutters, or windows, give us a call today. We’re your roofing and siding professionals and home repair specialists!
