Siding replacement – James Hardie, White Plains, NY

One of the most challenging aspects of working in home renovation is scheduling projects to meet homeowner expectations and deadlines. There are so many different elements at play, from the weather to supplies.

Here at Gunner, we have done our very best to make sure that we are as prepared as possible. We are roofing professionals, and we are siding professionals. And we’re a contractor that can repair almost anything, wood to metal.

That means we have protocols for all different types of weather, we keep an ample stock of project materials, and we schedule our new renovation jobs efficiently. Most of our clients are in need of having their projects completed quickly, which makes a lot of sense considering what we do. If your old roof has a leak (rotted wood or shingles) or the siding (vinyl or otherwise) is falling apart, you need a repair or have a completely new replacement for protection from the elements as quickly as possible.

Our client today in White Plains, New York (Westchester County), was no exception. He called us to request a new siding replacement. So we trekked out to White Plains, an outer suburb of New York City, and got with the homeowner for a siding consultation. After weighing all the options we laid out, he decided to go with cedar shake siding (wood) on the front of his house and lap siding on the sides and backs.

For the sides and back, we used James Hardie fiber cement lap siding in the color Pearl Gray. This James Hardie Pearl Gray siding is a popular choice due to its soft-nature color reminiscent of seashells and sand. It is a great option for the whole house or for accent pieces.

Speaking of accent pieces, using the cedar shake siding on the front is going to give your home texture and depth. It will complement the sides nicely without appearing too uniform. Shake and shingle siding is often associated with Cape Cod-style homes but can be a great addition to any home out there.

A quick word about James Hardie fiber cement lap siding. This the contractor gold standard in the siding material business. While vinyl siding costs less and is a practical choice, James Hardie fiber cement lap siding is the most durable you can get, and it’s fire-resistant and essentially pest-proof, plus it’s low maintenance and offers a great return on investment.

Now, back to White Plains. When we were replacing the siding, we ran into a very minor issue with the windows. The windows were pre-built with metal flanges. It was proving to be quite the challenge to get the siding around them.

Here at Gunner, we are perfectionists, so instead of risking a poor application, we created a component that allowed us to reframe the windows. This ensured that the new siding installation would be done correctly and neatly. It’s very important that siding (whether it’s cement fiber, shake, or vinyl) is installed correctly, because it is not just for looking nice. Siding is a protective element of your home. It helps keep out pests, rain, and snow. That said, proper vigilance and routine maintenance are important after the siding is installed.

Anything you do to the exterior of your home can really change up the aesthetic, but nothing changes it quite like a new siding installation. It can really give the appearance of a completely different home. This adds fresh color and curb appeal and can get you thousands of dollars more if you ever decide to sell your home.

Another bonus that comes with replacing your old siding, like replacing an old roof, is that you are also making your home more energy efficient. Don’t be surprised (be delighted!) when your electrical or gas bills goes down after you replace your old siding.

During our White Plains siding installation project, the homeowner had other exterior repair and replacement work done to his property. He was having all of the landscaping replaced and the old driveway repaved.

As chaotic as this had the potential to be, it was routine for us. We frequently work on big projects (in Westchester County, Fairfield County, and elsewhere in the tri-state area) that are doing total exterior makeovers. We are well versed in how to work with other companies and teams in the most efficient ways possible. Here at Gunner, it’s never a one-size-fits-all proposition.

We adjusted our team size for the White Plains job so we would be able to properly coordinate our schedules. That way none of the work would be overlapping or risk getting in the way of the other projects going on. We were able to finish three days early, in just under two weeks. It was a big project, so we were thrilled to be able to get it finished with time to spare.

After speaking with the project manager who headed this White Plains project, I wanted to take a quick second to acknowledge how much he enjoyed this assignment. The client was fun to work with and the house was great. It had to be one of the best projects we’ve had the privilege of working on.

After we were able to add the window component, the rest of the project came together seamlessly. The final result was perfect. The James Hardie fiber cement siding and cedar shake siding provided beautiful contrasts with the grays of the shingle roof and front walk (check out the pictures to see for yourself).
