Roof replacement – GAF asphalt, Blauvelt, NY

You know that saying, “Nothing lasts forever.” It’s applicable in pretty much every inch of life, including your home.

Now, house roofs and their shingles can last for a long time, but like the saying goes, not forever. Homeowners know that over time things are going to break or wear out and need to be replaced. Blauvelt is a hamlet in Rockland County, on the west side of the Hudson River about 25 miles or so from New York City.

For our Blauvelt client, his roof was reaching its maximum age, there were some areas that appeared to be sagging, the shingles worn, and the gutters were barely hanging on. All signs it was time to contact a roofing company for a little home improvement, like a roof replacement including new shingles and rehanging the gutters.

After getting Gunner Roofing info from one of his neighbors, he gave us a call. After our usual thorough review of the house (including sizing up the roof deck and shingles) and a consultation, we got started.

This was a pretty standard roof replacement. A lot of the plywood base was worn and soft, therefore it needed to be replaced. You can’t have a good roof installation and replace shingles without a good foundation.

As we’ve talked about in previous blog posts, different states have different plywood requirements for construction, like a roof installation. It’s really important as a roofing company (and siding company!) to be up to date on all of the latest building requirements. Since this house was in New York, the state required five-eighth-inch CDX grade plywood.

Here’s some basic information about plywood in general and CDX grade plywood in particular. Plywood technically is a manufactured material composed of thin layers of wood glued together at different angles to form a sheet. Because of its strength and relative low cost, plywood is a mainstay for a roofing contractor or other construction businesses.

There are more than a dozen ways to grade plywood, with CDX grade plywood being an unfinished variety that is a great choice when the look is not important or the wood might be covered. The “C/D” in CDX grade plywood just means the piece has appearance flaws and is not finely sanded. CDX grade plywood is perfect for construction of a roof deck or subfloor, where the plywood serves as a foundation for other attachments, like hardware or shingles.

In addition to the roof replacement, our Blauvelt client opted to have his gutters replaced as part of the home improvement job.
