GAF Timberline HDZ is an architectural asphalt shingle built around LayerLock® technology — a dual-phase bonding system that mechanically fuses the shingle’s common bond at the factory. The result is a Class A–rated, WindProven™-eligible product that consistently outperforms standard architectural shingles in adhesion, alignment, and wind resistance. Gunner Roofing is a GAF Master Elite® 3-Star President’s Club Contractor, meaning we’ve met GAF’s highest certification standard (fewer than 3% of roofing contractors nationally qualify, per GAF), and the Timberline HDZ is one of our primary shingle recommendations for home replacements across Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT.
Traditional architectural shingles rely on Dura Grip™ asphalt sealant to bond each shingle to the one below it after installation — heat from the sun activates the adhesive, and the bond forms over the first weeks on the roof. Timberline HDZ adds a second mechanism.
LayerLock® creates a two-phase seal:
This matters in a Northeast climate where shingles can be installed in April or October when temperatures are too cool for reliable sealant cure. The LayerLock component is already set before the shingle ever leaves the plant.
The WindProven™ limited wind warranty is only available on LayerLock-labeled shingles, and it’s notable because it carries no maximum wind speed limit — the first roofing shingle warranty of its kind, per the GAF press release announcing the product (January 10, 2020). That said, WindProven is a system warranty, not a standalone shingle warranty. To qualify, the installation must include:
All five components must be from the GAF qualifying product list. When installed as a complete system, that combination earns the WindProven warranty. When we spec a full GAF system on a Westchester or Fairfield County home, WindProven eligibility is part of why we do it.
The following figures are drawn directly from the Timberline HDZ installation instructions, document RESTL622:
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Shingle dimensions | 39 3/8″ × 13 1/4″ (1 m × 337 mm) |
| Exposure | 5 5/8″ (143 mm) |
| Coverage per 3 bundles | 98.4 sq ft (9.14 sq m) |
| Minimum roof slope | 2:12 |
| Minimum deck thickness | 3/8″ (10 mm) plywood or OSB |
| Standard fasteners | 4 nails per shingle — zinc-coated steel or aluminum, 10–12 gauge, heads 3/8″–7/16″ |
| Enhanced fasteners | 6 nails per shingle (required by some local codes or for enhanced wind coverage) |
| Target nail zone | 5 13/16″ to 7 5/8″ (148–194 mm) from shingle bottom |
| Min. penetration into wood deck | 3/4″ (19 mm) |
The StrikeZone™ is a wide, visually distinct nailing band on each shingle. Per the GAF press release, the StrikeZone nailing area is up to 600% larger than on the Timberline HD®, and GAF reports up to 99.9% nailing accuracy. A wider target means fewer misses — nails placed outside the correct zone create stress fractures and void wind coverage. On an active job site in July heat, a clearly visible, oversized target reduces installation error in a measurable way.
Summer in Westchester and Fairfield County means periodic thunderstorms, with gusts that can exceed hurricane force in isolated microbursts. The LayerLock dual-phase bond combined with WindProven system coverage addresses exactly that failure mode: the uplift that pulls shingles off a roof starts at the rakes and eaves — precisely where the WindProven system requires Starter Strip Shingles on both courses.
Per the GAF press release, the Timberline HDZ installs up to 30% faster than the Timberline HD®. That matters less on a small cape and more on a large Colonial or Dutch Colonial — common housing types across Westchester’s established suburbs. Faster installation means shorter roof-open windows during the unpredictable summer afternoon storm cycles common to the region.
Because Gunner is a GAF Master Elite® contractor, we can offer GAF Golden Pledge® and Silver Pledge™ warranties as available upgrade options on qualifying installations. (These are opt-in; not every job includes them.) The Timberline HDZ is eligible for both, as it’s part of the GAF roofing system those enhanced warranties require. If you’re weighing the upgrade — particularly on a larger home or one you plan to sell — it’s a conversation worth having before we start.
On every roof replacement, Gunner installs ice-and-water shield to meet or exceed code minimums and runs leak barrier through all valleys. Step flashing and counter-flashing are installed at every penetration — dormers, chimneys, skylights, and wall terminations. We also address attic ventilation on every project: the FHA guideline is 1 sq ft of net free ventilation area per 300 sq ft of ceiling area (per the GAF Pro Field Guide RESGN103, citing FHA standards), and inadequate ventilation accelerates shingle aging and can contribute to ice dam formation.
The NY State Residential Code (§R905.1.2, per the 2020 Residential Code of New York State / IRC 2018) requires a self-adhering ice barrier that extends from the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. [kb-2020-residential-code-of-new-york-state-irc-2018] The Timberline HDZ installation instructions (RESTL622) confirm the same 24″ (610 mm) minimum for leak barrier at eaves. We meet this on every NY project.
Gunner also handles the building permit — pulling and managing the permit application — on every project.
The Timberline HDZ carries a Lifetime limited warranty. In the Northeast, real-world service life for an architectural asphalt shingle is shorter than the maximum rated life: the combination of UV exposure, summer heat cycles, freeze-thaw in winter, and coastal humidity genuinely shortens shingle performance. Plan for a realistic replacement horizon of 20–28 years on most NY and CT homes, rather than the full rated term. A properly ventilated attic, correct installation, and avoidance of low-slope applications (below 2:12 requires modified methods) are the primary factors within your control.
Q: Is the WindProven warranty on every GAF Timberline HDZ job? No. WindProven is a system warranty that requires five qualifying GAF components installed together: LayerLock shingles (4-nail pattern), Starter Strip Shingles at eaves and rakes, Ridge Cap Shingles, Roof Deck Protection underlayment, and either qualifying ventilation or a Leak Barrier. All five must be used. When we specify a full GAF system, we confirm WindProven eligibility; if a partial system is used, WindProven does not apply.
Q: What’s the difference between GAF Golden Pledge® and Silver Pledge™? Both are enhanced warranty options available through GAF Master Elite® contractors like Gunner Roofing. They’re opt-in upgrades — not standard on every project. Ask us to walk through both if you’re evaluating a full replacement.
Q: Does the Timberline HDZ work on low-slope roofs? Per the installation manual (RESTL622), the minimum roof slope for standard installation is 2:12. Slopes below 4:12 require two layers of underlayment. Slopes below 2:12 are not approved for asphalt shingles at all — a membrane or low-slope roofing system is required. If your home has a flat or nearly flat section (common on dormers and porch roofs in older Westchester Colonials), we’ll specify the correct product for that portion rather than forcing a shingle onto an incompatible slope.
Q: How long does a GAF Timberline HDZ roof last in New York or Connecticut? The shingle carries a Lifetime limited warranty for the original owner. In practice, Northeast roofs with proper installation and ventilation typically reach 20–28 years before replacement is warranted. Factors that shorten lifespan: inadequate attic ventilation, steep UV exposure on south-facing slopes, impact damage from summer hail, and coastal salt-air environments in coastal Fairfield or Westchester.
Q: Do I need a building permit for a roof replacement in NY or CT? Permitting requirements vary by municipality. Gunner handles the permit application and management on every project in New York and Connecticut, so you don’t need to navigate that process yourself. We’ll confirm what’s required in your specific town before work begins.
Q: What is GAF Master Elite® status and why does it matter? GAF Master Elite® is GAF’s highest contractor certification level. Fewer than 3% of roofing contractors nationally qualify, per GAF. It also unlocks access to enhanced warranties (Golden Pledge® and Silver Pledge™) that are unavailable through non-certified contractors.
