HardieZone 5 (HZ5®) is the version of James Hardie fiber cement specifically engineered for climates with seasonal temperature swings, freezing temperatures, and snow and ice — exactly what Westchester County sees from October through March. If your home is in Westchester and you’re planning a James Hardie siding project, your home almost certainly qualifies for HZ5 products, and the full 30-year warranty is achievable — but only when the right products are correctly installed. Here’s what that means in practice.
James Hardie divides North America into two climate zones based on eight climatic variables that affect long-term exterior performance (per the HZ5 Best-Practice Installation Guide, v9.1). HZ5 covers climate zones 1 through 5 — the northern half of the United States, including all of New York and Connecticut. HZ10 covers zones 6 through 10, the hotter, more humid southern tier.
The formulation difference matters. Per James Hardie, HZ5 products are specifically engineered to perform in climates with seasonal temperature variations, freezing temperatures, and snow and ice. The fiber-cement mix and production process are calibrated for that environment — not generically “tough for anywhere,” but tuned for the Northeast’s freeze-thaw cycle.
Westchester County sits in IECC Climate Zone 4, with cold winters that bring repeated freeze-thaw cycling, nor’easter wind-driven rain, and wet autumns like the one we’re in right now. That’s exactly the performance window HZ5 was built for. If you see a James Hardie product at a big-box store and it doesn’t carry the HZ5 mark, it’s the wrong product for your house — it’s formulated for a warmer climate.
HZ5 products include HardiePlank® lap siding, HardieShingle® siding, HardiePanel® vertical siding, HardieTrim®, and HardieSoffit®. The same James Hardie look and profile, with the cold-climate formulation.
James Hardie’s 30-year limited warranty on HZ5 siding products covers the substrate — the fiber-cement board itself — against manufacturing defects. If you choose ColorPlus® Technology (factory-applied finish), the finish carries a separate 15-year limited warranty against peeling, cracking, and chipping (per James Hardie’s ColorPlus Technology Limited Finish Warranty). These are two distinct, stackable coverages.
The warranty is real, but it is not automatic. There are conditions that must be met for coverage to remain in force. The most important ones for Westchester homeowners:
1. Use the correct HZ5 product. James Hardie provides a zip-code tool at jameshardie.com to confirm which zone applies to your address. Every Westchester zip code falls in HZ5. Using an HZ10 product on an HZ5 house can void the warranty.
2. Maintain minimum clearances. Per the HZ5 Best-Practice Installation Guide, siding must be installed with a minimum 6-inch clearance from the ground. Where siding meets solid surfaces (roofs, decks, stoops, steps), the clearance rises to a minimum of 2 inches. At horizontal flashings, a ¼-inch gap is required. Violating any of these clearances can void the warranty. In Westchester’s older housing stock — colonials, capes, and split-levels built from the 1940s through the 1980s — these clearances are sometimes compromised by settled grade, added decks, or pavers that have crept up over the years. A proper install audit before siding begins is not optional.
3. Install a water-resistive barrier (WRB). The IBC requires a WRB behind all exterior cladding (IBC 2021 §1403.2), and James Hardie’s installation requirements reinforce it. No WRB means no code compliance and, typically, no warranty coverage for moisture-related failures. Every Gunner siding project includes full WRB installation and correct flashing at all penetrations and roof-to-wall junctions — this isn’t an add-on, it’s standard.
4. Prime and paint within 180 days. For factory-primed (non-ColorPlus) HZ5 boards, James Hardie requires the finish coat to be applied within 180 days of installation. Miss that window and the warranty can be compromised. ColorPlus products arrive pre-finished from the factory, eliminating this scheduling issue.
5. Follow all clearance, fastening, and flashing requirements. The full list is detailed in the HZ5 Best-Practice Installation Guide. The guide also warns that failure to provide proper clearances “may void any warranty on the products.”
Late October is when Westchester homeowners tend to notice their siding’s condition most clearly — leaves have dropped, the house is fully exposed, and you can see peeling paint, fiber-cement boards that have taken on moisture, or butt joints where the caulk has cracked and pulled away.
It’s also the last window before the ground freezes to address grade issues around the foundation (that 6-inch clearance problem). And if you’re planning a siding project for next spring, fall is exactly when to start the conversation — lead times for properly sequenced siding work, permitting, and material procurement in Westchester typically mean spring bookings fill up over the winter.
One more seasonal note: James Hardie ColorPlus touch-up products must be applied above 40°F (4°C), per the HZ5 guide. If you’re scheduling any warranty touch-up or repair work before winter, the window is closing.

As a James Hardie Elite Contractor, Gunner installs HZ5 products according to James Hardie’s published installation requirements on every project. That means:
Westchester’s housing stock skews older — a large share of the county’s residential homes were built in the mid-20th century, with framing and sheathing conditions that sometimes require correction before new siding goes on. Getting the substrate right before HZ5 goes up is what separates a warranty-eligible install from one that looks fine for two years and starts failing in year four.
Does every Westchester County home qualify for HardieZone 5 products? Yes. All Westchester County zip codes fall within James Hardie’s HZ5 climate zone (zones 1–5). You can confirm your specific address at jameshardie.com.
What does the 30-year warranty cover? The substrate against manufacturing defects. ColorPlus finish adds a separate 15-year limited warranty against peeling, cracking, and chipping. Both coverages require correct HZ5 product selection and full compliance with installation requirements.
What clearance is required from the ground? Per the James Hardie HZ5 Best-Practice Installation Guide (v9.1), a minimum 6-inch clearance from grade and 2-inch clearance from solid surfaces (decks, stoops, roofs, steps). These are warranty conditions, not suggestions.
Is a WRB required behind Hardie siding? Yes — both by IBC 2021 §1403.2 and by James Hardie’s own installation requirements. No WRB means no code compliance and, typically, no warranty coverage on moisture failures.
How long to paint factory-primed boards? Within 180 days of installation, per the HZ5 guide. ColorPlus products arrive pre-finished and eliminate this scheduling concern.
