For most people, buying a home is the biggest investment they will make in their lifetime.

In order to protect that investment from property damage, homeowners need homeowners insurance. There are a multitude of things homeowners insurance will protect you from, among those being weather damage (like hail), theft, and fires. It’s also usually required by mortgage lenders.

So why are we talking about homeowners insurance?

Our client in Greenwich, Connecticut, in today’s blog post had a problem. Her homeowners insurance was going to be canceled by month’s end if she didn’t get her roof cricket repaired. A roof cricket is a double-triangle structure that is built behind a chimney. This roof cricket diverts water and keeps the water from pooling around the chimney. And pooling water can lead to chimney damage, roof leaks, and other possible property damage.

She gave us a call mid-month, and we immediately got to work.

After finishing the cricket repair, our client was happy and relieved. Not only did we finish the project before her homeowners insurance was canceled, but the possibility of pooling water was eliminated, and it also looked fantastic. So fantastic, in fact, that it made her run another idea by us.

For years, she had always wanted a copper roof porch. She had reached out to a couple of different roofing companies, but they had all told her they wouldn’t be able to do it.

Now, you may be reading this and thinking:
“A copper roof porch? There is no way you’d be able to make that happen in 2022. Just like many other things, copper has been impacted by the supply chain issues and is in limited supply.”

Well, here at Gunner Roofing, something that sets us apart from most other roofing contractors is our supplier relationships. We maintain great relationships with all our suppliers, to the point they keep extra materials on hand for us, even in the current climate of supply chain issues.

This is one of the many benefits of using Gunner Roofing; we never have to delay installs due to a lack of materials. Where other roofing contractors had to say no, Gunner Roofing said yes. We also have a streamlined home project evaluation process that allows us to get the job started quickly without sacrificing quality.

For the copper roof porch, it wasn’t a straight install of the roof material. The wood decking underneath wasn’t perfectly flat. Before we could apply the copper roof, we had to make adjustments in order for it to lay flat.

Copper longevity has a lot to do with the initial install. Just like all our other projects, we wanted this to come out perfectly. By using high-temperature underlayment, we gave this copper roof porch a solid foundation.

For the roof material, we used standing seam copper spaced apart at 15 inches. This gives a sleek appearance due to the concealed fastener metal panel system. This roof material was applied meticulously by hand and applied with aesthetics in mind. Once we were finished with the chimney repair and copper roof porch, this house was by far the most eye-catching home on the block.

As an aside, let’s take a moment to highlight some famous copper architectural structures. After all, it’s not just houses that look great with copper additions. Since copper is one of the most popular types of metal, it only makes sense that it’s been used throughout history and around the world, including for all types of roofs. Copper has been a part of famous architectural structures such as:

  • Belvedere Palace in Vienna
  • Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
  • Museum of Fire in Poland
  • Daeyang Gallery and House in Seoul, South Korea
  • Minneapolis City Hall in Minnesota
  • The Berlin Cathedral Church in Germany
  • The Rotunda at the University of Virginia

This list of famous architectural structures would not be complete without mentioning the Statue of Liberty. That’s right. The Statue of Liberty is composed of an iron frame with a sheet of pure copper hung over it. When the Statue of Liberty was first gifted from France to the United States in 1886, she was actually a bronze color.

As you can see here, when you choose a copper roof, a copper roof porch, or copper accents, you are in great company. It can be added to virtually any types of roofs, and it is an excellent choice as flashing. Not only does it look good, but its extensive lifespan makes it an attractive choice against the weather. Copper is also malleable and able to fit over irregular roof structures.

Our Greenwich client was quite impressed with our work, and now that her insurance fears were laid to rest and had received a beautiful new copper roof porch addition, she was ready to enjoy her home.

In fact, she enjoyed the copper roof porch so much that she quickly contacted us for another home project, not in Fairfield County but in the beautiful, highly-sought-after Hamptons area. We really enjoyed the challenges that came with this home project and look forward to the next one!

And that next home project could be yours, should you need a roof inspection, roof repair, a new roofing system, advice on types of roofs, or even chimney repair. We can repair all kinds of property damage and help estimate repairs cost. We do windows and siding too.

We’re the roofing company that can do just about anything – and with customer satisfaction as our priority. There’s a reason so many of our customers came to us through referrals, and we’re proud of it.
