Siding replacement – James Hardie, Stamford, CT

October 17, 2024 by

At home. It’s the ideal place for you and your family. For most, there is nowhere they would rather be.

Unfortunately, there are some pests that also consider your home their ideal living space. Like termites.

Termites are often referred to as “silent destroyers” due to their ability to eat through walls, floors, and wood without being easily detected. If you find termites in your home, just know you are not alone. Every year, termites and their colonies cost property owners more than $5 billion in damages.

Did you know that termite colonies eat constantly, 24 hours a day? Without proper pest control, that gives these colonies a lot of time to do some major damage to floors, walls, and other parts of your home!

Most homeowners don’t even know they have termites lurking in their walls, as was the case with our customer in today’s blog post from Stamford, Connecticut, in Fairfield County on Long Island Sound.

This Stamford homeowner gave us a call for new siding replacement and window replacement. After discussing some different options during our window and siding consultation, we got to work.

At first, this job seemed like it would be pretty normal. We were supposed to install the new siding and do an even swap-out on the windows. That all changed pretty quickly when we started in on the old windows.

As soon as we removed the first window, termites poured out – just like you would see in a horror movie! Worse, the homeowner was outside when this happened and witnessed the whole thing. He was horrified, as any homeowner would be.

But our project manager calmly reassured him that termite infestation is more common than he realized. With the right pest control, the termite issue could be eliminated, and we would do our part to fix the damage (fortunately not yet widespread) that the termites created.

Of course, having termites is a frustrating headache for homeowners. However, the fact that we found them when we did allowed our client to utilize a pest control service, eradicate the termites, and fix the damage that was done, all before the termites caused major damage.

Since the termites had started to make a snack out of the window frames, we needed to completely remove the windows down to the studs (studs being crucial for support) and replace the trim.

Now, when you are installing a full-frame replacement window and trim, it’s necessary to remove some siding. This is why, if you’re thinking about replacing your windows along with new siding installation (and trim), we recommend doing it at the same time. That way we don’t have to cut into freshly installed new siding from the studs.

Speaking of lap siding installation, our client wanted a light, essentially neutral color full of elegance, which is why they decided to go with James Hardie siding in the color Pearl Gray. This Pearl Gray siding was the perfect choice for a perfect home. Between the new windows and the lap siding, this home exudes timeless elegance.

Since this blog post has touched on termites, something worth mentioning is that James Hardie siding (Hardie Plank) is basically impenetrable to pests. The wood pulp in a Hardie Plank is infused with cement. And what do carpenter ants and termites love to eat? Wood. So they have no interest trying to eat through this type of James Hardie siding. So James Hardie siding is virtually termite-proof siding. Beats typical vinyl siding by a mile.

What an amazing benefit for the homeowner who just had a termite ordeal. Not only does this lap siding protect against wood-eating pests, but it also discourages woodpeckers as well. As we’ve said in previous blog posts, we use the top products available in the industry to ensure our client’s home will be well-protected and looking brand-new for years to come. Again, vinyl siding doesn’t measure up to Hardie lap siding.

Something else worth mentioning specific to this project was the scheduling. At Gunner, we understand that our clients have busy lives that oftentimes don’t follow the typical workday, which might mean scheduling issues.

One of our top priorities is making these home renovation projects as stress-free as possible, which is why we will always try to work around your schedule. Working with our clients to come up with an alternative work schedule that best suits their life is actually something we do often.

While we were working on this Stamford house, our client was working overnights to help with overnight Winter Olympics broadcast coverage. This made scheduling the work a little challenging, but we were up to the task.

For this client, we scheduled overnight work so as to not disturb him when he was catching up on some much-needed sleep. We also worked weekends and were able to get the entire project wrapped up in two weeks, despite the termites setback.

Our Stamford client was pleased with the work we did, as the James Hardie siding and windows looked great – and the home is now damage-free and termite-free!

Maybe you’re in Connecticut (or elsewhere in the tri-state region) and ready for a home renovation project. Maybe a window replacement. A new roof or siding installation. Maybe you just need some direction on the best siding material for your home renovation project or the cost to replace siding, or simply need a siding consultation.

In any case, we’re the roof, window, and siding contractor for you. We can even do a little bit more than that. Get in touch with us to find out how we can help.
